The problem of drug trafficking from Afghanistan needs to be resolved within Afghanistan itself, said Uzbek and Tajik Presidents Islam Karimov and Emomali Rakhmonov. \"Until this problem is resolved in Afghanistan itself, and until Afghanistan earmarks money to discourage the population from producing opium, no solution can be found. All these barriers that we are erecting are a secondary thing,\" Karimov said at a Friday press conference in Astana, following a regular meeting of the Central Asian Cooperation organization heads of state. The organization is made up of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The Uzbek president noted that despite the activity of the antiterrorist coalition in Afghanistan, drug production in that country and the traffic of drugs from it are increasing. Certain estimates indicate that revenues from drug production in Afghanistan exceed $3.5 billion a year, Karimov said. \"This money, in particular, finances the terrorist and bandit units,\" he said.
