US forces in new Afghan operation

United States forces have announced a new offensive in eastern Afghanistan aimed at al-Qaeda forces. An American military spokesman, Major Richard T Patterson, said the operation codenamed Champion Strike began a few days ago near the town of Shkin, in Paktika Province, close to the border with Pakistan. Major Patterson said US forces had been involved in one skirmish already.
