Ulan Sarbanov, head of Kyrgyzstan\'s Central Bank, announced at a press conference in Bishkek on 16 June that inflation has risen 5 percent since the beginning of the year, RFE/RL\'s Kyrgyz Service reported. Prices for food products have jumped 13.5 percent.

Prices for food products have jumped 13.5 percent. Sarbanov called rising inflation worrisome but not catastrophic. He also pointed to an increasing trade deficit, which now stands at $112 million as compared to $45.7 million last year. He commented, \"The situation is not improving, and there are signs that the trade deficit is growing.\" (RFE/RL)
