Dr. Starr is research professor at the Foreign Policy Institute of SAIS, and the pro-tem Rector of  the University of Central Asia. He is a leading specialist on the society and politics of Central Asia, including Afghanistan, as well as Russian politics and foreign policy, U.S. policy in Eurasia, and the regional politics of oil.

Dr. Fairbanks is research professor of International Relations at SAIS, and a former deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. State Department. His areas of expertise  include politics and foreign policy of Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia; military forces in the region, oil politics, and human rights and democratization.

Dr. Cornell is the Editor of the Central Asia-Caucasus Analyst, the institute's bi-weekly web journal. He is a specialist on regional and security politics in the Caucasus and Caspian sea area, and security relations in Central Asia and Afghanistan as well as Pakistani politics and foreign policy.

Ambassador R. Grant Smith
Ambassador Smith served as U.S. ambassador to Tajikistan. He is an expert on Tajikistan's society and politics as well as regional affairs in Central Asia, including relations with Afghanistan. He is a senior fellow at CACI.

 

Dr. Aftab Kazi

Dr. Kazi holds a Ph.D. in international studies (Pittsburgh). He is a former civil servant with the U.S. government. His areas of expertise include the history, politics and international/security issues of South and Central Asia. His research has focused on issues of ethnicity and nationalism in these areas.

 

Dr. Kemal Kaya

Dr. Kaya holds a Ph.D. in Aeronautical Engineering. He is a former officer in the Turkish Parliament and Ministry of Defense. He is an expert on Turkish defense and aerospace industry, on Turkish politics and on Euro-Atlantic defense relations.
